Staff of Life
Staff of Life Natural Foods, a Santa Cruz Landmark specializing in farm to fork goodness, was opened 46 years ago by Richard Josephson and Gary Bascou to address the growing demand for organic produce, natural meats, and bulk shopping. From their beginning in 1969, they have grown from a small natural foods bakery into a major natural foods supermarket that has become a Santa Cruz tradition.
Staff of Life's building is certified by the city of Santa Cruz as a Green Building and is outfitted with a clean air system and many energy-efficient implantations such as daylight harvesting. Their parking lot provides electric car charging and is designed with Bio Swales to keep pollutants out of the ocean. In addition they are a Santa Cruz “Clean Ocean Business”. Staff of Life received this recognition for compliance with the City of Santa Cruz Best Management Practices to help protect water and wildlife from pollution.
